| Why do I get asked to sit outside with a pint of water when I am drunk? |
The law is clear that it will not tolerate venues that permit drunkenness and the police really clamp down on this issue. That’s why we have to be vigilant in making sure everyone has a good time and not a good hangover! The rather confusing legal position is that we are a venue designed to sell alcohol, but we are not venues that encourage you to get drunk (we don’t make the law – we just uphold it!)
It may mean that if you are showing any symptoms of drunkenness such as falling asleep against the wall/bar/partner, staggering, slurring your speech, unable to focus, thinking the cash point is a quiz machine or trying to chat up a bass speaker then don’t be upset when you are refused service and asked to sit outside and drink a pint of water. Sometimes we will get it wrong and may allow re-entry but please understand why we do it.
| Its’ a Students’ Union – they turn a blind eye to drugs don’t they? |
We have a Zero Tolerance to ALL illegal drugs and if you use in our venue it will jeopardise our ability to continue trading, your ability to stay at the university and very possibly a criminal record. Please don’t think that a bit of ‘weed’ is now practically legal. As our venues are situated on university campuses they have a “special” status (alongside schools, hospitals etc) in that all drug related activity is prosecuted.
Our staff are trained to spot potential drug related behaviours and situations and will intervene or pass on information as appropriate.
Moreover the police often use our venue as a test ground for drug clampdowns so this means we get visited by sniffer dogs and even sniffer computers throughout the year. Also the venue has hosted undercover operations when “dealers” are identified via the student grapevine.
BSU Venue is a part of a town centre scheme that includes the majority of High Wycombe’s trading outlets. These include pubs and clubs, but also independent shops as well as store chains.
It is designed to allow communication between all outlets so we can trade useful information about various serious issues, like violence and drugs.
The scheme runs in association with the local police who can produce information on local offenders and trouble makers. WW issue this to its members i.e – us, so we are aware of certain customers before they enter our Venue.
This system works both ways which means we are expected to give information about customers we have banned for offences. Dependant on how dangerous WW feel an individual is to other traders and their customers, determines if they should be banned from other premises.
In other words your behaviour here or elsewhere could result in being banned from all pubs in the area.
Now surely that just isn’t worth getting into trouble for!
